OnStar Expands Smartphone App Technology

We’re excited to announce that owners of most new 2011 Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC vehicles will soon be able to control key vehicle functions from their smartphones thanks to the power of OnStar.

Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC are developing brand-specific mobile applications that will leverage OnStar technology to allow vehicle owners to activate all of the functions available on a traditional vehicle key fob — remote start, horn and lights, and door lock/unlock.

Information normally found in your OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics email, such as oil life, tire pressure and lifetime average miles per gallon, also will be available and current as of the last ignition cycle. Important vehicle information, such as current odometer reading, vehicle VIN and OnStar account number, will also be readily accessible within the apps.

  1. Astrachick says:

So, how about those of us w/ onstar in our (none of the above) brands? I drive an Astra XR (Saturn) will they make this available to me?

  2. Jim says:

Why can’t this be made available for ANY vehicle with OnStar – my 2010 Malibu for instance?

  3. David says:

I’d like this on my yukon hybrid. Any way to upgrade?

  4. socialstacy says:

The mobile app technology requires OnStar’s new hardware, Gen 9, which just launched with the 2011 model year.

    • Linlee59 says:

I have a 2011 Buick Regal CXR and it did not have this technology & I was told by dealer that it can’t be upgraded. They tell me it’s because I bought an “early” 2011 model (bought 9/10). Will there be a time when I can upgrade?

  5. Ed says:

I have 2 vehicles with Onstar. Bring it to the rest of us loyal Onstar users. Even it is a limited set of functions. At minimum I should be able to get my vehicle diagnostics just like from the website.

  6. Ron says:

I agree, OnStar needs to extend this app to all cars that have OnStar, like my 2009 Malibu LTZ or my father’s 2008 Cadillac STS. I hope that they extend, and I would even be willing to pay an extra couple bucks for the feature on my phone if that what it takes to extend that feature to past GM cars with OnStar.

  7. rich says:

I would actually pay for continued service when my free year ends for my 09 Avalanche of this were available for it.

  8. socialstacy says:

We recognize the service limitations of our hardware and we are committed to exploring more flexible solutions.

    • Michael says:

How about a time frame? I renewed my subscription thinking my less than 1 year-old car was supported. It would be nice to feel that you actually care.

  9. Kahdir says:

Please offer this for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro!

  10. bespoke says:

I let my 2009 G8 OnStar subscription lapse following the free trial. I would renew my subscription immediately if the mobile app feature could be implemented.

Additionally, it would be a good idea to display passenger compartment temperature on the remote device (temp vs. time graph?) so you could determine when the vehicle was warm/cool enough to begin driving.

  11. Travito says:

Yeah, I’m still on the fence about letting my subscription lapse after the trial. I just bought a Used 2006 Buick LaCrosse with OnStar in it, If OnStar can unlock it when I call them, I really wish they could just make it to where just push a button on my phone and it goes through the OnStar center to do the same thing it would do if a OnStar rep did it. I would subscribe to OnStar in a heartbeat if I could do that, because my car came with a faulty keyfob, which I’m going to try to convince the dealership to replace tomorrow.

  12. Mr. Bill says:

Not sure if I will continue using OnStar if the new Android App for my Nexus One is not available for my 2006 Cadillac DTS. Living in the cold New England winter is no joke and when your car is in the employee’s parking lot a block away. Fortunately I made a deal with the security guard with an extra KEYFOB to start my vehicle so it’s nice and warm when getting into the car, especially on those cold snowy night. Was very excited when this was announced, but now seem very disappointed that it will not be available to all OnStar subscribers. The doom of OnStar subscriptions.
You should not hype up members if it’s not available for everyone.

  13. CBert says:

So I got the email saying “And now, you can enjoy new services including the OnStar MyLink™² Mobile Application which puts several OnStar features in the palm of your hand ”

Where do i download the app? I don’t find it in the android marketplace….. Is it actually available “now”?

  14. iaz28girl says:

I have a 2011 camaro and can’t wait to get this app! I will pay for onstar when my free trail is up. Onstar is a great safety feature that other manufacturers don’t offer.

I’m excited to see what other features they will come out with for the app once it is launched. I have an Droid and a camaro and never thought they would benefit each other! Ha ha

Yes I agree with everyone that GM/Onstar should see what they could do for the onstar users with older model vehicles considering they are paying for the service too. Plus they could get more people willing to buy their service if they offer an app with that type of control!

  15. Joshua says:

I’m disappointed that the App is not currently available for my 2010 Buick Enclave. I read in the FAQ that,”The OnStar MyLink mobile app will be made available on most 2010 model year GM vehicles in 2011.” I’m hoping ya’ll can speed this up. I know I sure would appreciate it!!!

It would really add a lot of value to that subscription I’m paying for every month. :)

  16. enclave4ever says:

Onstar, can you please let me know if this app will be available for 2010 models? if yes when will be available? I have a enclave 2010 model

    thank you

  17. MCG8GT says:

This is just another example of stuffed shirts making decisions without fully understanding their consumer base! Big companies like OnStar love to think they know what their customers want but in reality they don’t have a clue! OnStar how could you roll out this amazing new technology without thinking that current OnStar customers would not want this?!?!? You should have come up with a way for current owners to upgrade their hardware! Or at least give us a firm clear answer why you didn’t make it an upgradable option for the rest of us? Way to suits!!

  18. No Plans says:

Good Lord, GM has peed people off by improving their product! Is it so hard to understand that it took a hardware change to upgrade to SmartPhone technology? And that they can’t just press a button to upgrade older systems? Are you mad because they wouldn’t put fuel injection in your old Chevy Vega? Geez, what’s the matter with you people?! And you’ll pay $300 a year to be able to start your car remotely and uselessly pollute the air, but won’t pay it for all of the other pretty incredible safety and convenience features of On-Star? If your tush is so sensitive that it can’t get into a cold car, move to a warmer climate!

    • 2006 DTS says:

I think you could be a little more open minded . I can’t afford to run out and buy a new DTS so I can have this feature . But Onstar came out this xmass with the new mirror with Onstar that you can install for a nice chunk of cash . All company’s today want are the new customers and no loyalty to the customers they already have ! Cell phones are perfect example ! You get more perks if you are a new customer than the guy who is renewing a 2 year contract ! Now back to point . My car can have doors unlocked and all other features if I call Onstar . Instead of rewireing car just have a phone app that Onstar receives message when I push buttons on phone then they send signal to car or report back to phone ! Then charge more for that sevice ! I know there is a little more to it but can easily be done and would make them money and make customer from 2006 feel like they are as important for being loyal to Onstar !!!!

  19. Mike TEW says:

i CAN ACESS APP ON PHONE, BUT HOW DO i ENABLE REMOTE TO WORK THE FUNTIONS.
i DO HAVE A PIN NUMBER.

  20. Michelle says:

How do I set up myRemote Lock and Unlock?

    • LisaJean says:

Hi Michelle – Do you have an OnStar.com account set up yet? You will need one in order to enable the remote functions for the RemoteLink app.

If you follow this link http://www.onstar.com/web/portal/connectionsexplore?tab=2 and then click “See How to Use It”, a video will play that will give you the step-by-step instructions on how to set up the app with your phone and your vehicle.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions. – Lisa
