Joe Simmons’ Story
“I’m a stubborn, hard-headed man. I admit it. So when I got turned around, late at night, on a recent trip to Wichita, Kan., I really thought I could find my way to the proper road. Fifteen minutes later, I had no earthly idea where I was. The map program on my cell phone was no help whatsoever. So I grudgingly pushed the OnStar button on my rear-view mirror. Within ten seconds, a representative was on the line. I gave her the address of where I wanted to go. Within 20 seconds, she said she was sending directions to my car. Another ten seconds, and an automated voice began speaking through my radio, telling me to proceed to the next street and turn right. Directions also appeared on my radio’s digital readout. The system tracked my every turn and gave me instructions for the next one, but only when I was close enough to remember them. The pacing was perfect. And as if that weren’t enough, the CD player simply turned itself down, rather than off, while the voice was speaking, l eaving me with a pleasing background soundtrack to the perfect directions I received. I must have aimlessly driven at least ten miles before summoning OnStar. Those are the last miles I will ever waste before requesting turn-by-turn directions when I need them. Thank you, OnStar, for getting me back on track.”
