Remote Door Unlock Reunites Grandma with 18-Month-Old
Luann Dillon was having one of those hectic days. And it was about to get worse.
She was coming out of the grocery store, balancing her 18-month-old granddaughter, Mylah, on her hip and carrying a gallon of milk, a sack of groceries and her purse. As she says, “It was a lot for this 53-year-old grandma to juggle.”
Luann set the milk on top of the car and pressed the key fob to unlock the door. “Are you picturing this? As I’m loading my precious cargo and buckling her in, Mylah grabs the keys like babies do and pushes the lock button. I heard it — but at the same time ignored it — and tossed the keys away from her into the front seat. BIG mistake. Once everything was loaded in the car, I slammed the back door shut. Of course I knew immediately what I had done!”
What to do? Find a phone
“I told Mylah that everything was just fine and ran into the grocery to use the phone. A kindhearted customer loaned me a cell phone, which was so much better because I could go back outside and make the call where Mylah — who was crying by now — could see me. She calmed down as soon as she saw me. I wish I could say the same about myself!”
Problem solved — like magic
“I called my husband and told him he had to come home from work and bring me the spare keys. He calmly said, ‘Why don’t you call OnStar?’ And I told him — rather frantically — that I couldn’t call OnStar because my cell phone was locked inside the car, and the OnStar number is programmed in my phone. He pointed out that the OnStar sticker with the number was right in front of me, posted on the window. What a dingbat I am! But he called OnStar for me anyway — bless his heart. He knew I was frantic. Besides, he was curious how the whole process worked. And it was such a sweet sound when the car doors ‘magically’ unlocked. Nana and Mylah were once again reunited. All was right with the world.
“The owner of the cell phone I borrowed was quite impressed and asked me, ‘What kind of car is that?’ I explained to him that the car could perform such feats of wonder only because it had OnStar built in!
“My granddaughter is a beautiful, busy toddler and she holds her Nana’s heart. But that day, OnStar held it, too. My experience with OnStar was just so special that I knew I must share it. I have told my story to many young mothers, warning them not to let their OnStar coverage drop. It will be worth every penny when they need it. That one instance alone was more than worth the price of my whole subscription.”
